Chapter 27

Evan

When the meeting ends, people file out of the conference room and the crowd dissipates as everyone heads back to their desks. Jeff claps me on my back as he walks past me and into his corner office. I don’t have any windows in my office, but I do have a door that shuts, which is more than the cubicle gophers can say.

I spend a couple of hours reviewing the slide deck that was shown during our meeting, making sure I understand the scope of this shorter, more intense project schedule. With my role on the finance team, I need to know what other people I’ll need to work with to gather the necessary financial data.

At one point, Jeff walks past my door and asks, “Have you had any lunch yet?”

I shake my head and say, “No, I’ve been too busy. I’ll grab something soon.”

I realize that I’ve been sitting at my desk for three hours straight, so I stand up and stretch my legs. While I’m up, I decide to wander downstairs to the main break room to see if anyone has brought in some food. It seems like nearly every day there’s a plate of brownies or a box of donuts that someone has brought in.

I’m standing in front of the coffee machine, waiting for it to finish dispensing my latte, when I hear a voice behind me ask, “Scavenging for food?”

I turn around and see that Sophia has just walked into the break room with a reusable water bottle in her hand.

I smile and say, “Yeah, I forgot to bring in any lunch and I’ve been too busy to go out and get something. I figured there might be some snacks in here or at the very least, coffee.”

“I could run out and get you something, if you’d like,” Sophia offers. “I’m on my way to the print shop anyway in a few minutes.”

“That’s okay, I don’t want to add to your busy day. I’ll be okay. Thanks, though.” I touch her arm briefly as I talk, wanting to have a physical connection with her even if it only lasts for a second.

Sophia smiles at me and I wish I could kiss her right now. It’s not necessarily a secret that we’re dating and it’s not like it’s against company policy, but we’ve had a no PDA at work rule from the beginning. Still though, it’s tempting to break the rule right now after such a busy and stressful day.

She seems to be able to read my mind because she says, “I know” in a low voice before turning to fill her water bottle.

“Let me know if you change your mind about the food,” she says. “I don’t mind.”

“Thanks,” I reply as she walks out of the break room.

On my way back to my desk I get sidetracked at Jeff’s office. He sees me walking past his door and calls me into his office to talk. Our quick talk turns into a full-on meeting and I don’t leave his office until an hour later.
